Scott Tallon Walker Architects achieve BIM LEVEL 2 Verification

Scott Tallon Walker Architects are pleased to announce that they have achieved certification for the design and construction of BIM Level 2 projects in line with PAS 1192-2 by the British Standards Institute.

Scott Tallon Walker (STW) the UK and Ireland based architectural practice, will finish work on the 34,500 sq m Cancer & Surgery Facility for University College London Hospital (UCLH) in 2020. This is the second of only two NHS High Energy Proton Beam Therapy services.

 The central London hospital project designed in association with Edward Williams Architects, necessitated STW to achieve BIM Level 2 certification.  The firm was awarded its BIM Level 2 citation at a ceremony in London on 14th February 2019. 

BIM is a mandatory requirement for all large projects in Britain and Northern Ireland that are publicly funded. Though not yet mandatory in Ireland, it has been recently recommended by the Office of Government Procurement (OGP) for complex projects including hospitals and Third Level institutes from Q2, 2019. The use of BIM (Building Information Management) will reduce risk, improve performance and eliminate costly waste by virtually building and testing designs before they go to site, something that is particularly relevant in the current climate. 

With offices in the UK since 1974 Scott Tallon Walker has won many high-profile public sector design briefs there. As well as the ongoing UCLH project STW has very recently completed the Queens University Belfast School of Biological Sciences, and two projects at the University of Surrey – Innovation for Health and 5G Innovation Centre. STW will also complete the Trinity College Dublin Business School project in March 2019.

Commenting, Eoin O Móráin, Chairman, Scott Tallon Walker said, “As big building projects get more and more complicated technology has to keep pace. As an international architectural practice, we are involved in these large projects including hospitals, universities, airports etc. where standards, appropriately, keep rising.”

We realised early on that to grow our practice further that we would have to be at the forefront of technological accreditation, so I’m delighted for all our staff, across our offices, that they have achieved this extremely high standard. I’m pleased to note as well that BIM Level 2 will shortly be introduced as a standard in Ireland and it should help in curtailing spiralling building costs, that have been so much in the news recently.

Proton Beam Therapy and Inpatient Hospital

Scott Tallon Walker (in association with Edward Williams Architects) were appointed to design the UK’s first Proton Beam Therapy Centre. Proton Beam Therapy is the world’s most advanced form of radiotherapy, which uses a precision beam of high energy particles (protons) to destroy cancer cells.

The 34,600m2 facility is currently under construction in the heart of London at Grafton Way, next to University College of London Hospital, on Tottenham Court Road. When completed, it will offer a world-leading new radiotherapy to patients, which targets tumours more precisely.

The Design has been assessed as BREEAM Excellent and is a UK Government Exemplar Project for the use of BIM Level 2.

Queens University-School of Biological Sciences

Scott Tallon Walker Architects in conjunction with White Ink Architects were appointed in 2012 to a new project at Queen’s University Belfast following a competitive tender process.

In response to a forecast increase in student numbers and continued growth in biomedical and food research activity, Queen’s University has prioritised the new School of Biological Sciences as a key project to deliver the University’s strategic vision. The client brief sought a dynamic and stimulating teaching and research environment to meet current and future needs and to cement their reputation for excellence as a member of the elite Russell Group of universities.

In line with the Government Construction Strategy and the requirement to strengthen the public sector’s capability in BIM, the building is being developed as a collaborative Level 2 BIM project which provides an enhanced level of coordination while adding considerable value through the design process.

Trinity Business School, TCD

The new Trinity College Dublin Business School is a state-of-the-art development located on campus in Dublin City, Ireland.

The project will support the activities of the Trinity School of Business and the Department of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and will provide 12,000m2 of accommodation along with the restoration of 8 protected structures to provide student apartments.

In August 2013, the governance board of Trinity College Dublin included a vision statement for a new Business School in the invitation to tender for design team members circulated via the Irish Public Procurement Service. The Invitation to tender required the Project Team to develop the preferred design to a Level 2 maturity Building Information Model (BIM) to allow the procurement of a Construction Contractor (i.e. managed 3D environment held in separate discipline ‘BIM’ models and tools with attached data. Key requirements included:

  • BIM to be used for client “virtual walk through” at various stages of design.
  • BIM to be utilised to achieve optimum Energy performance for design options
  • Building information to be recorded within COBie parameters for handover to client

Brewery Quarter – Student Accommodation

This 413 Bedroom Student Accommodation development is part of a wider mixed use urban regeneration project, including a new events centre, on the former Beamish and Crawford Brewery site in the historic medieval core of Cork city.

The site is located between South Main Street and a turn in the south channel of the River Lee where a new pedestrian bridge and street, Lamley’s Lane, will form a new east west route linking the University to the city centre.

This project is currently under construction by BAM who are a leading contractor in Ireland who are committed to implementing Level 2 BIM standards rigoruously on their projects. STW are working closely with BAM to ensure that design and construction deliverables meet or exceed standards.

A successful BIM projects starts with  employer/project information requirements which are then translated into a BIM Execution Plan which is an important document that ensures all project team members are aligned in producing information that is coordinated and meeting client information requirements.

Shire Pharmaceuticals European Headquarters fit-out

The 7000m2 Shire Pharmaceuticals European Headquarters fit-out at STW’s Miesian Plaza is designed to LEED Platinum v4, the highest standard of sustainable design.

Their new European headquarters, with over 7,000m2 of net lettable accommodation, is located in two buildings on Baggot Street which are part of the Scott Tallon Walker designed Miesian Plaza, a 37,000m2 redevelopment of the former Bank of Ireland headquarters.

STW’s Interior Design Team completed both Category A & B fit out, as well as the procurement of Shire Branding and Compliance design and certification with Building Regulations. Space planning was completed in coordination with PBD (Partners by Design) who procured the furniture package.

The striking fit out is designed to LEED Platinum v4, the highest standard of sustainable design to complement the equally rated shell and core design.
The initial phase of Shire’s offices were officially opened by former Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD and Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor TD in April 2017. The Miesian Plaza Headquarters is now home to approximately 300 Shire employees.

Dublin’s Miesian Plaza nears completion

The 21st Century redevelopment of this classic STW designed building is nearing completion on Baggot Street. STW Interiors Department have been appointed to fit out all 235,000 sq.ft (21,800 sq.m).

The complex of three office buildings on Baggot Street are a Dublin Landmark recognised, as much for their transition from Georgian Dublin to higher development, as for their international flair.

Designed by Ronnie Tallon of Scott Tallon Walker Architects, the high-end corporate headquarters were constructed in two phases during the 1960s and 1970s.

The redevelopment provides ultra modern buildings with flexible, Grade A office accommodation, that are energy efficient and have the highest sustainability credentials.
The project is on target to achieve WELL Building Standard Compliance and the design goal of LEED v4 Platinum Rating for the building Core & Shell works.

UCLH Proton Therapy gets underway in London

The first NHS Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) Facility in the UK has started on site at Tottenham Court Road. Scott Tallon Walker (in association with Edward Williams architects) have led the design of this flagship £200m hospital project for University College London Hospital, from its initial feasibility stage.

The building will be a total of 34,500 sq.m, 4 floors (30 m) below ground housing the PBT gantries and six floors of short stay oncology surgical centre, including 8 Operating Theatres, diagnostic imaging services and 135 inpatient beds overhead.

The Design has been assessed as BREEAM Excellent and is a UK Government Exemplar Project for the use of BIM Level 2.

Green REIT Offices on Harcourt Road, Dublin

The elegant, STW designed, seven story office development at 4-5 Harcourt Road has started construction and is due for completion by the end of 2017.

Harcourt Road is a proposal to deliver Grade A, sustainable commercial offices with a strong identity and presence on Harcourt Road that will enhance the public realm. The proposal involves the demolition of the existing building and the construction of a new 7 storey building which reinforces the established building line on Harcourt Road, while creating a strong identity that will form a landmark on the street.

The public realm on Harcourt Road will be greatly enhanced by raising the first floor to a height of 6.15m, setting back the entrance to create a generous 5.35m high covered external space. The 6 storey over ground floor office building is slim, elegant and highly glazed. The principle materials are natural anodized aluminium and glass.

The slender proportions are accentuated by vertical fins which will catch the early morning and late evening light and add crispness and sparkle to the elevation. The predominantly northern orientation of the building to the street means the transparency of the glazed elevation can be exploited to the full.

The building is designed with excellent sustainable credentials to LEED Core & Shell standards.


Cork – Brewery Quarter Student Accommodation

The 413 Bedroom Student Accommodation development on the former Beamish and Crawford Brewery site in the historic medieval core of Cork city has received a Decision to Grant Planning Permission from Cork City Council.

The Brewery Quarter student housing is part of a wider mixed use urban regeneration project and overall urban design masterplan by Scott Tallon Walker which includes a new Events Centre and significant new urban realm to Cork city, including two new streets, two new foot bridges, a riverside walkway and a new city square.


Sandyford Offices gets Planning Approval

Full planning permission has been granted for 3 office buildings in Sandyford, South Dublin. The 24,000 sq.m development received approval in the minimum 8 weeks with no further information requests or third party submissions. The high quality design created by STW fully meets the Client’s brief and complies with onerous local authority requirements as well as the robustness of the planning application documentation which included an EIS.

The site is currently a ‘left-over’ back-land area surrounded by warehousing, highly engineered roads and motorways carrying heavy traffic. The design challenge was to transform this into a people friendly business destination and a new gateway into Sandyford. This involved a coordinated approach to the public realm, working in close cooperation with the Local Authority Traffic and Parks Departments and their proposed design for a relief road through the site transforming it into an urban tree-lined boulevard that will create a desirable business address, but will also connect directly with the Luas public transport and the urban centre of Sandyford.

The development which is part of an overall masterplan for the 5.7 ha site, consists of three 5 storey buildings providing approx. 24,000 sq.m of office space. Each building is approx 8,000 sq.m with a central atrium allowing maximum flexibility for a wide range of tenants. High environmental standards are achieved with each building designed to be near zero energy through passive design measures, including building form, materials and photo-voltaic panels.


Ulster University 66,000 sq.m Belfast campus, construction start

Scott Tallon Walker Architects were appointed as Design & Build architects as part of the Belfast based Lagan Group and Portuguese Somague-Engenharia Joint Venture Team for the design development and construction of the new 66,000 sq.m. Ulster University campus.

This project over trebles the size of the existing Ulster University Campus, and continues the return of Ulster University back into the city of Belfast, and into the Cathedral Quarter from its campus in Jordanstown (some 11 Km north of Belfast). The project includes new accommodation for five faculties, a new library and new student’s facilities, as well as alterations to the existing university buildings.

The scheme comprises a double basement with building blocks up to 11 stories in height that are interconnected at the lower levels, and a bridge over York Street connecting the new development to the existing University Building.

Construction on site commenced in mid 2016. Presently, the 30,000 cu.m. basement is now excavated with slabs and liner walls having been poured, as well as the adjacent building having reached 2nd floor level.

Minister turns the sod at Trinity

Education Minister Richard Bruton recently officiated at the sod turning of the 11,400 sq.m Scott Tallon Walker Architects designed Trinity Business School on Pearse Street, Dublin.

Overall, the development will span about 11,400 sq.m, with six storeys above ground and two below. Included in the build will be a 600 seat auditorium, restaurant spaces for up to 200 people, smart classrooms with the latest digital technology, and a rooftop conference room.

The Dean of the School of Business, Professor Andrew Burke said: “Trinity Business School is growing rapidly and becoming a major force in the international management education market. We need a world class building commensurate with these ambitions. This iconic new building is purpose built to cater for the School’s focus on real business learning and exploration in a diverse facility that enables entrepreneurship, creativity, ethical reflection and cutting-edge business analysis”.

Minister Bruton said: “I am delighted to be turning the sod today for this new state of the art facility. The Trinity Business School is one of the leading providers of business education through its undergraduate, postgraduate and executive leadership training courses. It plays an important part in providing future business leaders who are educated to the highest standards and supports the growth of entrepreneurship across our economy”.
